How to set up a 301 redirect from an old address to a new page

Go to Settings › Domains, open the URL Redirects tab and click + Add Redirect. Pick the source domain, a specific path (e.g. /contact) or the entire domain, and the target: a custom URL, a funnel step or a website page.

Updated on

Before you start

  • The source domain (the one in the old address) must already be added under Settings › Domains. Otherwise it won't show in the list.
  • If the target is a funnel step or a website page, that funnel or website must be connected to the source domain.
  • Note the exact path of the old address (the part after the domain, e.g. /summer-promo).
Where to find it

Settings › Domains › URL Redirects › + Add Redirect

Step by step

  1. Open Settings and click Domains.
  2. At the top of the page, open the URL Redirects tab.
  3. Click + Add Redirect.
  4. Under Source, open Redirect From and choose the domain of the old address.
  5. Choose what to redirect:
    • Specific path: a single page. Enter the path, for example /contact or /resources/guides/getting-started.
    • Entire domain: all traffic on that domain goes to the target (handy for sending an old domain to the new one, or www to the non-www domain).
  6. Under Target, choose the type:
    • Custom URL: enter the full address, including https://. Works for any page, internal or external.
    • Funnel: choose the funnel (only those linked to the source domain appear) and the step where visitors should land.
    • Website: choose the website and the target page.
  7. Click Add Redirect.
  8. Open the old address in an incognito window and confirm it lands on the new page.

Tips

  • In the path, use only lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens and slashes. Leave out ?, %, &, = and #: if the old address had parameters (e.g. ?utm_source=email), enter just the clean path.
  • Avoid chains: if page A goes to B and B goes to C, redirect A straight to C.
  • Use a 301 when the old address should stop existing. If both pages will stay accessible and you only want to tell Google which one is the main one, use a canonical URL instead of a redirect.
  • To edit or delete a redirect, go back to Settings › Domains › URL Redirects.

Common problems

  • The redirect doesn't work → Check that the source domain is connected and that the path you entered exactly matches the address people are opening.
  • The page gets stuck in a loop → The target redirects back to the source. Change the target or delete one of the redirects.
  • I still get a 404 after changing a page path → Create a redirect from the old path to the new page and make sure the new page is published.
  • The funnel or website isn't available as a target → It isn't linked to the selected source domain. Link it to the domain or use Custom URL with the full address.
  • Google still shows the old address → Search engines take time to recrawl. In Google Search Console, inspect the new URL and request indexing.
