How to create blog authors and categories and show a category menu with search

Go to Sites › Blogs, click the Settings gear, open Authors and click + Add New Author (name, photo, social links, bio); under Categories, create your categories. To show them on the blog, open the blog site with Edit Site and drag in the Category Navigation element, with search turned on if you like.

Updated on

Before you start

  • You need access to Sites and a blog already created under Blogs.
  • Create authors and categories before writing posts: when publishing, you pick them from a list and only existing ones appear.
  • For each author, have the name, a photo (up to 10 MB), social media links and a short bio ready.
Where to find it

Sites › Blogs › Settings (gear icon) › Authors / Categories

Step by step

Add an author

  1. In the left menu, open Sites and click Blogs.
  2. Click the Settings gear icon.
  3. In the left menu, open the Authors tab and click + Add New Author.
  4. Fill in the name, upload the photo, write the image alt text, paste the social media links and write the author's bio.
  5. Click + Create Author. You can create as many authors as you need.

Create categories

  1. In the same Settings, open the Categories tab.
  2. Click + Add Category, enter the name (e.g. "Implants", "Hygiene tips") and save.
  3. Repeat for each blog topic. You can also create a new category while publishing a post.

Show the category menu and search on the blog

  1. Under Sites › Blogs, click the blog's name, then Edit Site to open the blog site builder.
  2. Under Elements, drag Category Navigation to where you want the menu on the page (usually at the top).
  3. Click each menu item (e.g. Category 1) to set its name and choose the blog category it links to. Repeat for the remaining items.
  4. For a post search box, turn on the Blog Search option in the same element.
  5. Save and publish the blog site.

Tips

  • Categories help readers find what they're looking for and give the blog structure for search engines. Keep them few and clear.
  • You can assign more than one author to the same post. It's best to have the author created before you start writing.
  • The author's photo and bio appear on the published post; write the bio with the reader in mind (who they are, specialty, contact).

Common problems

  • The author doesn't show in the list when publishing → It hasn't been created yet. Add it under Settings › Authors and go back to the post.
  • The category doesn't show in the blog menu → The Category Navigation element doesn't fill itself in: edit each item and link it to the right category.
  • The author photo won't upload → The file is over 10 MB. Shrink the image and try again.
  • Search doesn't appear on the blog → The Blog Search option is off in the element, or the blog site wasn't published after the change.
