How to create a custom field
In Settings › Custom Fields, pick the object (for example, Contacts), click Create Field, choose the type, give it a name and folder, and click Create Custom Field. The field then shows up on records, forms, filters and automations.

Before you start
- You need access to Settings.
- Decide which object the information belongs to, because it can't be changed later:
- Contact: details about the person (birthday, source, preferred contact method, service of interest);
- Opportunity: details about a specific deal (budget, urgency, expected close date).
- Check the list first for an existing field with the same purpose, so you don't create duplicates.
Where to find it
Settings › Custom Fields › Create Field
Step by step
Create the field
- In the left menu, open Settings and click Custom Fields.
- In the object selector at the top of the page, choose the object (for example, Contacts) and stay on the Fields tab.
- Click Create Field in the top-right corner.
- Choose the field type that matches the information, for example:
- Single Line for short text, Multi Line for longer text;
- Number or Monetary for amounts;
- Date Picker for dates;
- Dropdown, Radio Select or Checkbox to choose from fixed options;
- File Upload, and more.
- Fill in the details:
- Field Name: the label your team sees;
- Folder: the group the field appears in on the record;
- Key: the identifier used in messages and automations (suggested automatically);
- optionally, a description and placeholder text.
- If the type has options (dropdown, radio), enter each option.
- Check the Live Preview on the right.
- Click Create Custom Field.
Organize fields into folders
- In Settings › Custom Fields, choose the object and open the Folders tab.
- Click Create Folder, give it a name (for example, "Medical details" or "Preferences") and save.
- When creating or editing a field, choose that folder.
Tips
- To use a field's value in a message, insert it with the editor's field picker (it uses the field's key, for example
{{contact.date_of_birth}}). - Create fields before importing contacts: you can only map columns to fields that already exist.
- Use dropdowns instead of free text whenever answers are fixed: it makes filtering much easier later.
Common problems
- The field doesn't appear in my form or workflow → Check the field's object. Only Contact fields appear in forms and contact workflows.
- I created the field on the wrong object → The object can't be changed. Create a new field on the right object and delete the old one if it isn't being used.
- I can't find the field on the contact record → Look in the folder you chose, or turn off Hide Empty Fields on the record.
- I don't see Custom Fields → Your user doesn't have access to Settings. Ask an admin.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a custom field and a custom value?
A custom field stores a different value for each contact (for example, birthday). A custom value stores one value for the whole account (for example, your business phone number).
Can I use custom fields in reports?
Yes, in some dashboard and report components, depending on the object and field type.
