How to buy a phone number for your business

Go to Settings › Phone System, open the Phone Numbers tab, click Add Number, pick the country, filter by number type and click Proceed to Buy. The number is ready for calls and messages in your account right away.

Updated on

Before you start

  • You need permission to manage phone numbers in the account (usually an admin).
  • Make sure you're in the business account where the number will be used: the number belongs to that account.
  • If you already have a number with another carrier and want to keep it, don't buy a new one: port that number instead.
  • Some countries and number types require documents, an approved address or a regulatory bundle before purchase. Have your legal business details handy.
  • For United States, Canada, Puerto Rico (+1) and Israel (+972) numbers, an identity check of the person responsible is required, once per account.
Where to find it

Settings › Phone System › Phone Numbers › Add Number › Add Phone Number

Step by step

  1. In the left menu, open Settings and click Phone System.
  2. Open the Phone Numbers tab.
  3. Click + Add Number and choose Add Phone Number.
  4. Select the Country for the number.
  5. Click Filter to narrow the search. You can filter by:
    • digits or words the number should contain (for example, your area code);
    • capabilities: voice, SMS and MMS;
    • number type: local or toll-free.
  6. Review the available numbers. If none fit, click Refresh Results or change the filters.
  7. Select the number you want. Before continuing, check its capabilities (voice, SMS, MMS), number type and whether an address is required.
  8. Click Proceed to Buy.
  9. If you're asked for identity verification, an address or a regulatory bundle, complete it in full. The purchase won't go through without it.
  10. Confirm the purchase. The new number shows up in the Phone Numbers tab.
  11. Set up the number: where calls go, voicemail and which users use it (see the related articles).

Tips

  • If you plan to send texts, filter for numbers with SMS capability. Not every number supports both voice and SMS.
  • After buying a US local number you'll see a registration notice: without A2P registration, texts to the US won't be delivered.
  • Assign the number to a user so that user's calls and texts always go out from the same number.

Common problems

  • No numbers show up for the area code I want → Inventory changes often. Broaden the filters, try a nearby area code or another number type (for example, toll-free) and click Refresh Results.
  • The purchase gets stuck on the address or documents step → That country requires regulatory details. Fill in the requested address or regulatory bundle and wait for approval before trying again.
  • I'm being asked for identity verification → It's required for +1 (US, Canada, Puerto Rico) and +972 (Israel) numbers. Complete it with a valid ID; it's usually done only once per account.
  • I bought the number but texts to the US don't arrive → US numbers need an approved A2P registration linked to the number before sending SMS.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the number I already have with another carrier?

Yes, but not by buying it. To keep using that number, port it in or, for outbound calls only, verify it as a caller ID.

Is the number available in every account?

No. The number belongs to the business account where it was purchased.
