How to customize your store's checkout page

Updated on

Before you start

  • You need access to Sites in your account and an existing store.
  • Have the text (or link) of your terms and conditions and privacy policy ready, if you want to require them.
  • If you use shipping rates calculated by address, keep the address, city and ZIP/postal code fields mandatory.
Where to find it

Sites › Store › (open the store) › Checkout page › Checkout element

Step by step

Open the checkout settings

  1. Open Sites › Store and open the store.
  2. Edit the Checkout page and click the Checkout element to open the settings panel on the right.

Fields and form

  1. Under Form options, choose whether to show the billing address and whether to show or hide the shipping section.
  2. Set each field to Mandatory, Optional or Hidden: phone number, address, country, state, city and ZIP/postal code.
  3. Turn on Notes at checkout if you want customers to leave order instructions. Notes later appear on the packing slip.
  4. Optionally turn on address auto-complete (suggestions while typing) and full name validation.

Countries and location

  1. Under Country Selection, choose Ship to all locations or Ship to specific countries and select them.
  2. Under Default Customer Location, choose: no preselected country, Geolocate (detected from the IP address) or Show all countries.

Terms and conditions

  1. In the panel, go to Terms and Conditions and turn on Enable Terms and Conditions.
  2. Write the checkbox text and add links to your terms and privacy policy.
  3. The checkbox appears before the payment button, unchecked, and customers can only pay after ticking it.

Text, contact, coupons and colors

  1. Under Contact options, choose whether to create a new contact on every purchase and whether to validate disposable emails.
  2. Under Button actions, set what happens after payment: go to a URL, go to a page on the site, or keep the default.
  3. Under Text Customization, change the headings, labels and buttons of each section (contact, shipping, billing, payment, cart summary).
  4. Enable or disable the coupon field.
  5. Under Colors, match the background, payment button and text to your brand; under Typography, set fonts and sizes.
  6. Click Save, then Publish.

Tips

  • The fewer mandatory fields, the faster the checkout. Hide only what you don't need to fulfill the order.
  • If you select no countries under Ship to specific countries, all countries stay available.
  • When a customer chooses pickup in store, the shipping section disappears on its own.

Common problems

  • Country selection doesn't show at checkout → The Country field (or state) is hidden in the shipping details. Set it to mandatory or optional.
  • Shipping rates aren't calculated → Some carriers need the address, city and ZIP/postal code. Keep those fields mandatory.
  • The customer can't pay → With terms enabled, they must tick the acceptance box; a message shows until they do.
  • The customer saw a verification challenge → Checkout is automatically protected against bots. It's usually invisible; if a challenge appears, they just complete it and continue without re-entering their details.
