How to know who clicked the link in a WhatsApp template (trigger links)

Create the link in Marketing › Trigger Links, then in Settings › WhatsApp › Templates add a Trigger Link button to the template (or a body variable mapped to the link). A workflow with the Trigger Link Clicked trigger reacts to each tap: tag, follow-up or offer.

Updated on

Before you start

  • Your WhatsApp number must be connected to Elooo System with Meta onboarding completed.
  • You need permission to create WhatsApp templates and edit workflows.
  • Have the destination URL (page, form, offer) ready.
  • The template must be approved by Meta; trigger links work with the WhatsApp (V2) send action in workflows.
  • Limit: 2 buttons total per message (trigger link buttons + regular buttons), matching WhatsApp's URL button limit.
Where to find it

Marketing › Trigger Links › Add Link · Settings › WhatsApp › Templates › Create Template › Button › type Trigger Link

Step by step

  1. In the left menu, open Marketing and click Trigger Links.
  2. Click Add Link, name it (for example, "20% Welcome Offer") and paste the destination URL.
  3. Click Save.
  1. Open Settings › WhatsApp › Templates and click Create Template.
  2. Fill in the name, category (for example, Marketing) and language.
  3. Optionally add a header (for example, an image) and write the body, with any variables you need and their sample values.
  4. Choose one of two ways to include the link:
    • Button (recommended): add a Button of type Trigger Link and select the link from step 1. Keep it to 2 buttons at most.
    • In the body: place the cursor where you want the link, click Add variable and map that variable to the trigger link. For the variable's sample, paste the destination URL.
  5. Click Create to submit to Meta. Once approved, the template shows as Active.

3. React to the click in a workflow

  1. Open Automation › Workflows and create a workflow from scratch (for example, "Clicked 20% offer").
  2. Click Add New Trigger and choose Trigger Link Clicked.
  3. Under Add filters, choose Trigger Link and select the link used in the template. Save the trigger.
  4. Add your actions: tag, follow-up message, field update, team notification…
  5. Publish the workflow and send the template (in a conversation, in bulk or from another workflow).
  6. Track clicks in the workflow history and in the template report (delivered, read, button clicks).

Tips

  • Use 1 or 2 clear calls to action ("See Pricing", "Book Pickup"): each can lead to a different workflow branch.
  • To test two button labels, create two trigger links and compare the clicks.
  • If the customer doesn't reply and you want to follow up outside the 24-hour window, get a second template approved in advance.

Common problems

  • The Trigger Link button type doesn't appear → No links exist yet in Marketing › Trigger Links, or you lack template permissions. Create the link first.
  • Meta rejected the template with the link variable → The variable's sample is missing (paste the destination URL) or the body starts/ends with the variable. Fix it and resubmit.
  • The workflow doesn't fire on click → Make sure the trigger filter points to the same link used in the template and that the workflow is published.
  • I can't add more buttons → The limit is 2 buttons per message, counting trigger link and regular buttons.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an external integration to count clicks?

No. Elooo System records the click natively and can trigger workflows directly.

What's the difference between the button and the in-body link?

The button is easier to tap and cleaner; the in-body link is for when you need the link mid-sentence. Both record the click.
