Trigger links

How to create a trigger link that tracks clicks and starts automations

In Marketing › Trigger Links, click Add Link, give it a name and destination URL and save. Insert it into an email or SMS; every click is logged on the contact's timeline and can start a workflow with the Trigger Link Clicked trigger.

Updated on

Before you start

  • Trigger links work in email, SMS, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp messages, and Google Business Profile.
  • Have the URL of the page you want to send the contact to (your website, an offer page, a form…).
Where to find it

Marketing › Trigger Links › Add Link

Step by step

  1. In the left menu, open Marketing and click Trigger Links.
  2. Click Add Link.
  3. In Name, type a clear name (for example, "October offer").
  4. In Link URL, paste the destination URL.
  5. Click Save.
  1. Open the email (campaign, template or conversation) or SMS where you want the link.
  2. In an email, highlight the text that will become the link, click the link icon and pick the trigger link from the list. In SMS and conversations, use the option to insert Trigger Links and pick the link.
  3. Send or save the message. The URL is replaced with a tracked link.

Start an automation when someone clicks

  1. Open Automation › Workflows and create a workflow (or open an existing one).
  2. Click Add New Trigger and choose Trigger Link Clicked.
  3. Under Add Filters, pick the trigger link you created.
  4. Add the actions you want (for example, add a tag, create an opportunity or send a follow-up message).
  5. Save and publish the workflow.

Tips

  • To reuse the same template for monthly promotions, link the trigger link to a custom value that holds the offer URL. Just update the custom value and future sends will point to the new page.
  • In a workflow, you can use a Wait step until the link is clicked, with the Timeout option to move on if the contact doesn't click within the time you set.
  • To see a contact's clicks, open them in Contacts and check the Activity tab.

Common problems

  • The contact clicked but the workflow didn't fire → Make sure the workflow is published and the filter points to the right link. Also check that you inserted the trigger link and not the page's regular URL.
  • I changed the custom value but old emails still go to the old page → That's expected: the change only applies to future sends.
  • I put the custom value straight into the email and clicks aren't tracked → Insert the trigger link (which is tied to the custom value), not the custom value itself.
  • I can't use a trigger link in a channel → It only works in email, SMS, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp messages, and Google Business Profile.
