Which custom field type to choose (URL, date and time, rich text, users, options with images)
In Settings › Custom Fields, when creating a field pick the type that fits the data: URL (with domain controls), Date and time (date only, time only, or restricted to future/past dates), Rich Text, Users (one or several team members, with follower access) or checkbox/radio options with images.

Before you start
- You need admin access to create custom fields.
- Decide what information the field will store and on which record (contacts, opportunities, companies…). Not every type is available on every object.
- If a text field already holds that information, consider whether a new field with the right type is worth it.
Where to find it
Settings › Custom Fields › (choose the object) › Create Field
Step by step
Create the field with the right type
- In the left menu, open Settings and click Custom Fields.
- Choose the object (for example Contacts) and click Create Field.
- Pick the type based on the data you will store (see below).
- Name the field, choose its folder and fill in the type-specific options.
- Check the preview and save.
URL
- Use the URL type for websites, social profiles, portfolios or any web address, instead of a text field.
- Under domain controls, choose: allow all domains, allow only specific domains (for example only linkedin.com) or block specific domains.
Date and time
- Choose the format: Date & Time, Date Only or Time Only (for example a preferred contact time).
- If it makes sense, restrict the selectable dates: future dates only (for example a renewal date), past dates only or a specific date range.
Rich Text
- Use Rich Text when the information needs bold, italics, headings or lists (instructions, summaries, long notes).
- For plain short or long text, keep using Single Line or Multi Line.
Users
- Use the Users type to link team members to the record (for example the assigned technician and the sales rep).
- Choose whether the field accepts one or multiple users.
- Selected users get follower access to the record.
Options with images
- On Checkbox fields (multiple choice), add an image to each option when a picture helps tell them apart (products, designs, styles).
- On Radio fields (single choice), add an image or icon to each option.
Tips
- Date fields allow date filters in smart lists; text fields don't.
- A URL field with allowed domains stops the team from pasting emails or loose text where a link should be.
- Before building a process on a field type, confirm that type is available on the object and in the place you will use it (forms, contact page, automations).
Common problems
- The type I want isn't offered for this object → Availability varies by object. Try another object or use the closest type (for example Single Line instead of URL).
- The team can pick past dates in a renewal field → Edit the field and enable the future dates only restriction.
- A link saved in the URL field is rejected → The domain isn't in the allowed list (or is blocked). Adjust the field's domain controls.
- Rich text shows up unformatted in an email → Not every place renders the formatting; test before using the field in messages.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use URL or text to store a website?
URL. Besides validating the address, it lets you control which domains are accepted.
Can I turn an existing text field into a URL field?
Create a new URL field and copy the values over; don't switch the type without first confirming you won't lose data.
